The Gibeonites and the Promises of God

“And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us. So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.”

Joshua 10:6-7

The Gibeonites were an enemy nation of Israel. Aware of the awesome power of God they decided to attempt to make an alliance with Joshua and the people of Israel. Through deception they were able to receive a promise of alliance from Joshua and the leadership of Israel. Joshua pledged to protect the Gibeonites in the name of the Lord.

The Gibeonites did not deserve the protection and promises of God but they had it just the same. A day soon came when the Gibeonites were about to be attacked by neighboring armies. They called to Joshua and the army of Israel and the people of God came to their rescue.

The Gibeonites strangely remind me of myself. I do not deserve the blessings and promises of God, but God through Jesus has made them available to me. And just like the Gibeonites in my distress, God will come to me with his help, protection, direction, and blessing. We can rest in the promises of God!
