Cause and Effect

“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”

Mark 4:39

Jesus and his disciples are on the sea of Galilee when a huge storm ravages their ship. The wind and waves are raging, the ship is full of water, the disciples are scared, and Jesus is soundly sleeping. This image of Jesus peacefully resting while all the people around him are fearful should remind us, in the midst of the storms we face, Jesus is not worried, but is very much in control.

The disciples were frantic, but Jesus was asleep. In desperation the disciples woke Jesus. He arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea, Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. It was a miracle. Jesus took care of the cause and effect of the problem with one sentence. It was the wind that had caused the terrible waves. So Jesus rebuked the wind. Jesus is able to take care of the instigator of any problem. Whatever is causing the waves of your life to roll and crash Jesus can take care of that.

He also took care of the effect. Because of the action of the wind, the sea was raging. The seas without the wind would have never been disrupted, but the wind had made a mess of things. Jesus in his perfect completeness, took care of both the cause and effect. The lesson for us is this: when the sea of life is raging because of the actions of some outside source, Jesus is able and will take care of the cause and effect of the storms of life.
