Compassionate Living In A Half Dead World

And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

Luke 10:30

A man making his journey through life falls under the attack of thieves. His condition is critical. The Bible says he is “half dead.” This half dead man could go either way, life or death, his future was dependent on someone being willing to come to his aid, give of themselves and, with compassion, make a difference.

A priest and the Levite (religious people we would expect to show compassion) see the condition of the man and heartlessly passed by on the other side of the road. If the future of the half dead was left in their care he would certainly die.

Then comes the unlikely Samaritan. He looks on the man and he had compassion on him. He tends to his needs and personally cares for him. His willingness to do something about the half dead saved the man’s life.

The condition of the traveler is very familiar to all men today. Satan is a thief, robber, and murderer. His purpose in the world is to “steal and to kill.” Satan desires to condemn all men to destruction. The good news is Jesus Christ has made a way for us to overcome the power of the Thief.

In Jesus’ gospel plan, he commanded that Christians get involved and, with compassion, give of themselves to help bring half dead people the hope and love of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. It is so easy to see a need and pass by on the other side of the road. Jesus Christ is asking you to be different. When you see the need of hurting people, take the time to compassionately help! It may mean the difference between life and death.
